Why
Undergo Breast Reduction Surgery?
Having
fuller and
shapely breasts is indeed an
asset, a gift in fact to some. Women born
with them act and feel confident and proud of their body. The greatly
endowed ones, however, think and act the opposite. Having oversize
breasts make them feel
insecure and embarrassed, affecting their
personal growth and social life. Some girls’ ages 12- 15
years old who already have big
breasts are also not spared
from the
social stigma perceived of them by the conservative society. In
addition, large oversize breasts can also pose health risks such as
back, neck and shoulders pain due to weight, as well as circulation and
respiratory problems.
THE
SOLUTION: BREAST REDUCTION.
THE
GOAL: The primary goal of this procedure is to make the size of your
breasts proportional to your body frame and to lessen the discomfort
related with overly large
breasts.
THE Breast
Reduction
Surgery:
Breast
Surgery
involves removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin through
incisions, and then the nipple is placed in new position. In some
cases, excess fat may be removed in conjunction with liposuction.
Dr.
Alonzo, however, states that if the breast
size is largely due to
fatty
tissue and excess skin is not a factor, then liposuction alone may be
used. The reduction technique will be determined by your breast
composition, individual condition, personal preferences, and Dr.
Alonzo’s advice.
It
is performed in the hospitals’ operating room under local
anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, with overnight stay.
The procedure normally takes one to three hours or more to complete.
After
the surgery, you will have bandages, which will be removed after a
week. Stitches will be removed after 7 to days. You will experience
tenderness; swelling and some minor pain and discomfort for a few days,
but these can be relieved by the medications prescribed by Dr. Alonzo.
POST
SURGERY RECOVERY:
You
can go back to work 7 days following your surgery. Some patients report
that they go back to work 5 days following their surgery. While
recuperating at home, you will be advised to wear a therapeutic bra
which you will wear for a few weeks until the marks, bruising, and
swelling are gone. Strenuous activities like exercise and sports can be
resumed after 1 month to 6 weeks. Dr. Alonzo will also advise you to
avoid engaging in sexual activities as your breasts are stuffed with
hormones, to avoid prolong swelling. Final result can be seen after a
month. However, it may take six months to 1 year for your body to
completely adjust to your new breast size.
Surgery
Risks: Risks associated
with breast reduction may include scarring, asymmetry, altered nipple
sensation, delayed wound healing, fluid retention in the breast,
difficulty in breast-feeding, but if you will follow your surgeons
instructions, those risks can be limited.
Be sure to discuss
all your concerns about the surgery with Dr. Alonzo during your initial
consultation, and follow all his instructions from your pre-surgery to
post surgery care, for a speedy and healthy
recovery.
To achieve optimal
results, breast reduction can be done alone or in conjunction with
nipple
and/or areola reduction
and/or breast lift.
